Bausch Datacom, one of the Last Dinosaurs to continue offering PSTN Modems
Traditional and well-renowned modem companies such as Tron, Multitech, Westermo and many others, including various Chipbuilders, are losing interest in PSTN solutions. They have put entire portfolio's EoL or are planning to do so. In a few years it will be hard to find PSTN solutions. Bausch Datacom fills this Gap.

With the rise of TCP/IP datacommunication and the shift to broadband mobile solutions such as LTE Cat. '1' and Cat. 'M1', most industrial applications are evolving to these technologies. This is for instance the case in the industrial M2M or IoT world and alarm world, but also electricity, water, gas companies have abandoned 'the PSTN way'.
There are almost no routers, (socket) modules for integration purposes and plain fixed line modems available in the market these days. The number of suppliers who support this way of communication (Switched data over telephone numbers - pay by time) are decreasing dramatically.

This evolution is of course one of common sense, the advantages of high speed, broadband, TCP/IP based communication is the way to go forward, no doubt. Big corporations have defined their strategy and came to the conclusion that there is simply not enough Return on Invest anymore to maintain product portfolios and supporting engineering (and engineers!).

However, there are still thousands of installed bases and infrastructures all over the world which function perfectly based on PSTN datacommunication. The good old telephone line - copper is tangible and extremely reliable once installed - is in many countries still being used in aging but surviving infrastructures. In alarm applications for instance, many devices still use PSTN, if not as main commmunicator, then at least as a dependable backup tool. Also, the trend of automating cash registers as a tax control tool is in many cased backed up through PSTN. The examples of PSTN use are countless.

The good old telephone line - copper is tangible and extremely reliable once installed - is in many countries still being used in aging but surviving infrastructures.
